Hello Higher-Minded Humans!
Like many of you, I have complicated feelings and childhood trauma around Mother’s Day. Despite that, I usually publish a gift guide for this time. Because the “mother” label can be applied in ways that don’t fit into the status quo, and also, I genuinely love embracing that role in my life.
However, given all that is being done to damage her and all of the things being removed to protect her, I think we should focus on the ultimate Mother this holiday. So, instead of a gift guide, I’ll be compiling some folks who work to preserve her. This is by no means an exhaustive list, and I would love to hear any additions you’d like to add. :)
Melany Kahn, author of Mason Goes Mushrooming - check out an earlier episode in which Melany talks about teaching children how to forage safely.
Freedge - an incredible resource for folks who want to build and maintain a community fridge, which is a great way to avoid food waste.
Strange Plants - “Strange Plants is a deep dive into how the bizarre and beautiful sides of nature find their way into art and other forms.”
Alicia, AKA She Grows at Home - a very accessible tutorial series on TikTok (or YouTube) that makes growing medicine at home easy. You can check out her episode in which she talks about her mission to make home cultivation available to everyone.
Alexis Nikole, AKA BlackForager - enormously entertaining and educational content about the accessibility of foraging and lack of awareness around food deserts.
fleurdinand - An artist named Alex creates beautiful artwork with plants. (We featured a few prints in a recent gift guide)
Plant Cooking Club - a Substack that provides a ton of plant-based recipes and shopping tips (they even have a master shopping list).
The Herbal Crafter - a Substack that offers a bunch of accessible herbal and plant-y concoctions and recipes, as well as foraging tips.
How will you honor Mother Nature this week?
