Hello Higher-Minded Humans,
It’s time for our annual listening recommendations to make the sweltering days a little more enjoyable. We listen to the following all year long, but if you aren’t a big podcast listener, there’s no better season to start! Longer days mean more opportunities to add to your library.
(This is by no means an exhaustive list!)
How to Do the Pot
3 out of 4 women in the U.S. have access to legal cannabis, and most of them have a lot of questions. How to Do the Pot is an award-winning cannabis podcast sharing joyful stories and useful advice about cannabis for health, well-being, and fun—especially for needs specific to women.
The show covers everything from the best weed for sex, to how weed is helping women with cramps and with menopause. How to Do the Pot’s Essential Strains series will help you find your favorites, including why women love strains like Harlequin or Gelato. You’ll hear women across the country share stories about their first time buying legal weed and learn how they talk about cannabis with their families.
How to Do the Pot is hosted by Ellen Scanlon, whose mission is to inspire women to make more informed choices about their health and well-being. Join Ellen as she talks to medical professionals for practical tips, experts for cannabis recommendations, and listeners for funny and intimate stories.
Diana’s take: This show is super informative while also being accessible. I also love how original the series are - each one creates a fun way to learn. Ellen also highlights important health issues and how cannabis can help manage symptoms.
Watch What Crappens
Official description:
Obsessed with The Real Housewives? Can't get enough of Vanderpump Rules? We're here to help. Watch What Crappens airs five times a week, which means you never have to wait long to get your fill of Bravo recaps, gossip, and shadiness. Join hosts Ben Mandelker and Ronnie Karam as they dissect nearly every detail of every show that airs on Bravo.
Diana’s take: Ben and Ronnie do the best impressions of Bravo stars, and they are so hilarious that I often skip watching the show and just listen to their recap. They are so fun to listen to that I could listen to them recap shows I don’t even watch.
Sounds Like A Cult
Official description: A podcast about the modern-day “cults” we all follow. Each episode asks the culty questions we’re all wondering… Do you think SoulCycle is a cult? What about Elon Musk stans? Or the Royal Family? What about spiritual influencers? Is Instagram itself a cult? Sounds Like A Cult, hosted by Amanda Montell, author of Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism, analyzes a different zeitgeisty group every week to try and answer the big question: This group sounds like a cult, but is it really? And if so, how bad is it?
Diana’s take: I am a HUGE fan of Amanda Montell’s books, because she really makes you think about the way language is used to manipulate, weaponize, empower, etc. This podcast has something for everyone, because it makes you realize that so many things are labeled as a cult and pushes you to examine that what that means in a highly entertaining way.
Get Planted with Sara Payan
Official description: “Planted” with Sara Payan, is an ongoing conversation encompassing the vast world of cannabis, with a focus on education. Sara Payan, educator, policy advocate & author, engages policy makers, media professionals, industry leaders and more, about their relationship with cannabis in the era of legalization.
Diana’s take: This show covers all aspects of cannabis with fascinating guests, and Sara has personable and insightful interview style. This show is great for cannabis industry newcomers and experts alike, with educational deep dives about policy and all other areas of business.
The Weekly Planet
Official description: The Weekly Planet covers all things movies, TV shows and comics. Often considered the first and worst podcast on the Planet Broadcasting Network.
JR’s take: Two left-leaning Australian comic book nerds discussing comic book related news and reviewing movies. Not only is the podcast fun and hilarious at times, but it’s also removed from the toxicity that is often associated with nerd culture.
Welcome to Nightvale
Official description: WELCOME TO NIGHT VALE is a twice-monthly podcast in the style of community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale, featuring local weather, news, announcements from the Sheriff's Secret Police, mysterious lights in the night sky, dark hooded figures with unknowable powers, and cultural events.
JR’s take: A fun fictional podcast that explores the weird and bizarre in the guise of a local news radio program. The tone and cadence of the show is calming while the stories are fantastical.
