Fun fact: I once was an admin for a FB group that was for writers with mommy issues. In the golden? age of confessional writing, I leaned into my unprocessed trauma for the sake of having my writing published.
It led to a lot of healing and unlearning though, and a lot of people have reached out over the years to tell me how it helped them. One of my essays has been included in a few therapists’ practices, so it wasn’t all bad. It was like ripping off a Band-Aid. Though, to be honest, it was like having a Band-Aid over a gaping (mother) wound that requires multiple stitches. That is to say, it is a continuous learning experience.
One thing I continue to struggle with, as you can see below, is my relationship with this particular holiday and how it has changed over the years. Ultimately, I don’t expect gifts, but my partner does the most anyway. Which I love, and I love being a mother, to a tiny human, pets, and plants.
Here is just a small illustration of how I publicly worked out some mommy issues:

Plant and earth medicine continue to be a big part of my healing journey, so I created a gift guide for this Hallmark holiday that wreaks havoc on so many of us -

“I fully understand how Mother's Day can be a tricky time for folks. Many of us have difficult relationships with our mothers that can make celebrating them difficult. Or maybe it’s just a time that brings up challenging memories and feelings, regardless of the actual dynamics of your relationship with your mom. For whatever reason, those of us who have challenges around Mother's Day can benefit from using plant medicine to illuminate some thoughtful and healing inner reflections on, and ultimately understanding of, the role our mother wound plays in our lives. My personal favorites for deep, truth-telling to myself, plant-medicine-assisted moments are cannabis and psilocybin. Sitting with our mother wounds, we can allow the plant medicines to deepen our understanding and acceptance of what is and to objective learn whatever that wound and connection is meant to teach us. And trust me, our mother wounds have an ultimate lesson and purpose!” - Ashley Jelks

Rootless Double Strawberry Daily Bite
While seaweed isn’t technically a plant, I think it falls under the earth medicine umbrella. These bites are great for a mid-day boost that makes your gut happy. Also, the polyphenols in seaweed are great for metabolizing hormones!
Demeter Cannabis Pick-Me-Up Cologne Spray
When I first heard about this spray, I’ll admit I was skeptical. I love the smell of cannabis for the most part, but do I want to smell like it? Turns out, this scent harkens to the days when I would use CK One to cover up my sesh smells. That is to say, it doesn’t smell like cannabis, but something I would use to cover the dankness some don’t appreciate. Also, the collection includes shower gel and lotion, which are lightweight and long-lasting.
The Healing Rose CBD Bath Soak bundle
This set is the ultimate gift for yourself or someone else because it offers so many healing options. Each scent is a unique and lovely blend of powerful essential oils, CBD, and Epsom salts. Right now, THR is running a 30% off Mother’s Day sale, so don’t miss this deal! Check out this episode of GPPM, where Laura talks about the complexities of being a public-facing cannamom.
Mota Magick CBD Bath Bomb, 150 mg
This beautiful bath bomb adds even more magick to your bathing routine with a lovely scent, dried flowers that release into the water, and a moisturizing formulation. Unlike some bath bombs I’ve tried, this one submerses into the water without leaving any chalky residue, which is a big plus for me.

When you first open the container of Treefrog, the bright red slime might be a bit intimidating. But the cooling, soothing formula absorbs immediately, without any residual color. Just a small amount goes a long way in relaxing tight muscles and reducing soreness.
I hope you get the chance to be a mother to your inner child and take some time for reflection and self-care, regardless of the day.
Until next time, stay high and beautiful. :)
